I am not an undergraduate, may I still submit?
Yes, however you must be a current UBC student (undergraduate, graduate, PhD). Can I submit work I completed on exchange? Yes. I'm an exchange student at UBC, can I submit? Yes. Do I need to include a works cited? Yes, work that requires citations should be done in Chicago footnote format. How flexible is the word count? While our word count is somewhat flexible, we ask that you try and abide by the word limits as much as possible (minimum 500, maximum 3000). Do I have to submit photo's to have my written work eligible for the journal? Yes. However, if students do not have any photographs to accompany their written work (or vice versa), we will allow students to seek out other students and submit a joint submission. For example, if you have a great piece of writing but no photographs to match it, but know of someone who does, you may submit as a joint application. Alternatively, you can contact our editors who can assist in finding you a submission partner, or who can help guide you towards a photo essay topic of your own. How can I get involved with the journal? The journal is frequently looking for student involvement. At the beginning of every Winter term, we will put forth a call for volunteer applications. These positions are open to all UBC students. We also frequently look for student travel blogs and social media accounts that we can feature on our social media. What is the Outside-In Photojournal Conference? Each year, the journal hosts a photojournalism conference where we invite renowned photojournalists to speak to students about their experiences and work within the field. The Conference usually takes place in March and is open to all UBC (and otherwise) students, staff and faculty. The Conference is free of charge and will feature food for participants.
